The Leaguers, Inc. Opens New Sensory Room in Newark to Strengthen Children's School Readiness and Well-Being
NEWARK, NJ, October 14, 2026, The Leaguers, Inc. celebrated an important milestone in early childhood education on Wednesday with the official opening of its new Sensory Room at 731 Clinton Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. The occasion brought together children, parents, and staff to mark the introduction of a dedicated space designed to support children's sensory, social-emotional, and developmental needs.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Mr. Walter Frye, Chief Executive Officer, and Dr. Quiera Evans, Chief Programs Officer. The opening brought Mr. Frye's vision of creating a supportive environment for children to life and reflected the organization's ongoing efforts to provide inclusive, high-quality early childhood programming.
Supporting the Whole Child Through School Readiness
As a Head Start program, The Leaguers, Inc. recognizes that preparing children for school involves more than academic learning. Children also need opportunities to develop self-regulation, confidence, communication, and social-emotional skills that help them participate successfully in the classroom.
As the organization has seen an increase in the number of children who benefit from additional sensory and social-emotional support, the need for a dedicated resource has become increasingly important. The new Sensory Room provides an engaging environment where children ages three and older can explore sensory experiences, practice calming strategies, and learn to recognize and manage their emotions with guidance from trained staff.
The room is designed to complement classroom instruction rather than replace it. When children need additional support, staff can help them use the space to regulate their emotions, refocus their attention, and prepare to return to classroom activities. These experiences can support children's communication, participation, and overall development.
“Our Sensory Room represents more than a new space. It reflects our commitment to listening, responding, and creating inclusive environments where every child has the support needed to learn and succeed. School readiness means supporting the whole child, including their academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs,” said Dr. Quiera Evans, Chief Programs Officer.
A Vision Brought to Life Through Leadership and Teamwork
The opening represents the realization of Mr. Frye's vision to create an environment where children can receive additional support tailored to their individual needs. The initiative demonstrates the organization's commitment to identifying opportunities to strengthen its programs and respond to the changing needs of the families it serves.
“When I envisioned this Sensory Room, I wanted it to be more than just a physical space. I wanted it to be a welcoming environment where children could feel supported and receive the individualized care they need. Seeing this vision become a reality reinforces our commitment to creating high-quality, inclusive learning experiences for every child,” said Mr. Walter Frye, Chief Executive Officer of The Leaguers, Inc.
Bringing the project to completion required coordination and dedication from the organization's leadership and staff. Dr. Earl Wallace, Director of Mental Health and Disabilities, and his team played an important role in organizing and preparing the Sensory Room, helping ensure it was ready to serve its intended purpose.
Their contribution highlights the value of collaboration among early childhood educators, mental health and disability professionals, administrators, and families. By working together, these partners can help create learning environments that recognize children's different developmental needs and provide appropriate support.
Creating More Inclusive Learning Experiences
The opening was met with excitement from children and parents, making the occasion a proud moment for the Leaguers community. The new room adds another resource to the organization's efforts to create learning environments where children feel welcomed and supported.
For families, the initiative demonstrates the importance of recognizing individual differences and responding to children's needs with understanding and care. For children, the room offers opportunities to develop skills that can help them navigate classroom routines, interact with others, and participate more comfortably in learning activities.
The Sensory Room is an additional developmental resource within The Leaguers' broader services. It does not replace professional assessment or mental health care when needed but complements the support children receive through the program.
Through this investment, The Leaguers continues to advance its commitment to school readiness by addressing the academic, social, emotional, and developmental foundations children need as they prepare for future learning.
